8 Basic Automotive Repair Checklist Points

So it pays to keep an eye on your vehicle's condition and be proactive with your vehicle maintenance to identify any minor issues before they become major, expensive, time consuming problems. 

1. Check the Engine Oil Level Monthly

Replace dirty oil with fresh, quality oil. If you notice a drop in your vehicle's performance or poor fuel economy, have it diagnosed and corrected immediately.

2. Check the Tire Pressure at Least Once a Month (preferably more often). Maintaining the correct tire pressure helps improve vehicle stability and traction and can improve gas mileage by as much as 3%.

3. Warning Lights Appear on the Instrument Panel 

When something needs to be checked. Do not ignore these warning lights; instead, take your car to an expert to diagnose the problem before it becomes major issue.

4. Know What's Wrong With Your Vehicle.

It's easy to overlook small problems with your vehicle when you're driving down the road, but these little things add up. If you notice any warning signs, such as low oil pressure, check your owner's manual to see how often you should service your vehicle.

The last thing you want to do is drive it too long and have something major go wrong. The best way to avoid issues is by making sure you keep your vehicle up-to-date with regular checkups!

5. Be Prepared for Unexpected Problems.

If you notice any unusual noises or smells coming from your vehicle, take note of them. Also, make sure your tires are inflated properly and that your brakes work as intended.

Lastly, keep an emergency kit in your vehicle in case you run into any problems along the way. You may even want to consider a membership with AMA (or equivilatant if you are outside Alberta) to be prepared for any unexpected roadside issues and need assistance.

6. Make sure a pre-service inspection is Done.

Before starting any automotive repair work, do or have a thorough pre-service inspection done. This includes checking fluids levels, tire pressure, brake pads, belts, hoses, lights, wipers, windshield wiper fluid, battery, and other items. If something isn't right, stop immediately and call a professional, if having it done discuss it with them to fully understand the outcome of the inspection.

7. Have your oil changed regularly.

Oil changes should occur every 3,000 miles (4,828 km) or 6 months, whichever comes first. It's also a good idea to have your tires rotated every other oil change, have your tire alignment checked at the same time, and check the level of engine coolant. 

8. Pre-schedule Service Appointment to Maintain Maintenance Consistency

Pre-scheduling your appointment is important for maintenance consistency and proper protection of your vehicle. Pre-schedule an appointment to have a check up, and oil change every three or six months. A professional shop will send you a reminder text, email or phone call 1 week prior to your appointment to remind you of the appointment and if is still a convenient time, (same as a dentist would.)

During the appointment a service writer or mechanic will take the time to explain what they are checking and what needs to be done, if anything. They'll also let you know how important the issue is and whether or not it can wait until another time, or if it needs to be done right now, They will let you know what the costs will be and how much time it will take.
